Another knee update – it works !!

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

Well, after Saturday’s sorry episode, I have brought forward my final consultation with the knee surgeon. It’s tomorrow – fingers crossed its something easy to fix. Think i will be pushing for mri scan this time!!

A while ago, I had decided to book every wednesday from beginning of October till Christmas off, so I could do two walks a week – Wednesday and a weekend day. Obviously, as I havn’t been walking but it seemed I could cycle, I thought I would go out today for an easy cycle – just to Sutton Park. The intention was to test the knee to make sure it worked on the bike, and this could be useful news for the surgeon.

So I did, and the knee did work. I cycled to the park – about 6 miles round trip, with a lap of around 7 miles. All the time, I was waiting for the discomfort, but it just didn’t come. Even up and over Barr Beacon, I managed to keep in decent gear with no pain. This afternoon, I cleaned the bike and visited Leisure Lakes in Wolves to buy some clothes, and even then, I only suffered slight muscle aches as normal after exercise.

So its baffling, the knee can’t handle a 1.5 mile walk, but 13 mile bike ride is fine – Go figure.

Knee problems again

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

Went out today to see how my knee was. Was confident of little problems having done a 12 mile bike ride last Sunday without problem. Also, I have been doing a >1 mile walk each day to the sandwich shop for lunch.

Today’s agenda was a 3 miler around Sutton Park. A couple of small hills (only about 50 metre height gain) and easy ground. It started well, but as I turned to the home stretch, the knee pains started again. Exactly the same pain with similar intensity to pre-op. It has been 6 weeks since operation, and I had my last physio session so presumed this sorry episode was all over :(

Although I have 4 weeks to wait until final consultation, I will speak to Bupa Monday to arrange an earlier consultation, get this thing sorted once and for all. My main concern now, is whether it is only walking, or general activity that can start the knee pain. Again, after the bike ride last weekend, can I repeat a similar distance on Wednesday as I have the day booked of….

Torn knee cartilage

Saturday, August 4th, 2007

After 4 months of pain and minimal walking (partially due to NHS 24 also!!) I have finally plucked up courage to visit a knee surgeon regarding my knee. I went on Thursday to Little Aston Bupa Hospital, and after a short consultation, discovered I had torn my cartilage. Not a bad tear, but a tear non the less. This no doubt has caused the walking pains I have suffered, and the fix – an arthroscopy. Bupa never fails to impress – I could have had my first consultation on the evening I first made contact with Bupa, and I am now booked in for the operation next Saturday.

I believe (and hopefully am not too ambitious) that I will be back on the hills in a couple of months! May just see the last rays of October’s sun before getting the Winter clothing out again. This discovery has obviously delayed project peaks and wildcamp until ’08 now.

Ruddy ankles

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

Here we go again – another walk, another injury. This time, its my left ankle bone rather than the right one. To recall a little history for those at the back, I bought some new Scarpa SLs, which were fine initially. However, after the second walk, I noticed my right ankle swelling up and becoming quite painful. Over the last few months, I have continued to wear them using various pieces of physiotherapy padding to relieve the pressure. This has had mixed results but after last week’s Scafell descent in pain, I decided to sell these, and buy some trail shoes which hopefully wouldn’t touch my ankle bones. (more…)

2nd Project Peaks walk

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

2nd training walk happened yesterday, this time just Nick and myself as Chris was sunning himself down south at Motorcyle racing – typical as we had no sun.

We started early to get upto Hathersage for about 10ish. This would allow Outside (great shop!) to bash my Scarpa’s into a comfortable state before walking the ridge between Lose Hill and Rushup Edge. As the weather has been great over the last few days and I have been trying to lose weight from the rucksack, I decided to leave waterproof trousers and a fully waterproof coat at home. Instead my trusty new Paramo Fuera windproof and water resistant would keep me warm and dry (as if it would rain!).

As we drove up from Walsall, the weather disappointed as it was cloudy and looked like rain was a possibility. This was confirmed with a few rain drops as we entered Buxton and continued through to Hathersage. I comforted Nick by suggesting it will brighten up as the sun burnt away the moisture. We got to Hathersage in the end about 10:15 and I spent around 30 mins having the Scarpas repeatedly smacked with a hammer to try to prevent my previous ankle rubbing issues. Whilst I sweated and worried about my £150 boots being bashed, Nick enjoyed a cup of tea in the cafe upstairs.

We finally arrived at Castleton about 11.20, parked up and started walking 11.30. Starting by walking through the village, we brought some pasties and sandwiches then turned uphill towards Lose Hill. Initially the hill ascended gradually until about 50 metres before the end and the legs started to suffer. This suffering was exaggerated as the light cloud turned to mist then finally rain. My waterproof less legs were getting wet though luckily for me, Nick was windward of me and therefore got most of the rain. It was at this point that I realised the difference between waterproof and water resistent the Fuera was starting to let in a bit of water due to the constant raining even if not heavy.

At the summit we turned left toward Back Tor straight into the wind and rain. Nice, now the hooded face was wet. We kept our heads down and continued at a considerable speed over Back Tor, grabbed lunch in the shade of Hollins Cross and speeded again over Mam Tor. It was disappointing that we couldn’t see anything other than mist. Only 2 after the start and we were descending our final hill of the day – well back trekking from Lords Seat on Rushup Edge. We got to the road and turned towards Castleton and the most interesting section of the walk for me. It was interesting walking along the old Chapel-en-le-Frith – Castleton Rd that finally collapsed in ’77 after many rebuilds over the last 100 years. Very strange walking on what appeared a decent quality road other than the huge cracks and totally displacement of the surface.

We got back to the car about 3.30 expecting the ‘Journey From Hell©’ being a bank holiday. Amazingly it was one of my fasted return journeys, less than 2 hours. Note to self: waterproof that Fuera.
